The producer Anna Beattie was inspired to pitch the show to the BBC after realizing traditional village fete baking competitions could work on TV. She even brought homemade scones to the first meeting! Mel and Sue were quickly signed up and they had the inspiration to suggest Mary Berry to present. Thank goodness they did!
